Before I got sober, I didnât pray, unless you count uttering in desperation, âHelp me!â
Even though I didnât know what it meant, I memorized the Lordâs prayer, just to fit in at my best friendâs church.
** I had no idea that connecting regularly with a Higher Power (HP) could solve my troubles and fears. **
My favorite author, Karen Casey, writes: â(1) Prayer promises relief when we are anxious. (2) Prayer connects us with our Higher Power when we feel isolated and full of fear. (3) Prayer frees our minds from the obsession to plan other peopleâs lives. (4) Prayer helps us take action when we feel compelled to change the circumstances of our lives. (5) Prayer becomes a wonderful resource to draw on when living through our painful moments. (6) And prayer gives us the willingness to accept Godâs solution for every problem that plagues us.â (from âA Life of My Ownâ)
My friends say that praying is asking, and meditation is listening to the God of our understanding. So, I meditate to gain all the wise direction I can get! (I also attend meetings, do service work, and read inspiring spiritual texts to keep myself balanced and stress-free).
** HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR CONSCIOUS CONTACT WITH YOUR HP?

I’m so pleased to announce that the audiobook of 50 Ways to Worry Less Now is now available! Get it from Audible, Amazon, or i-tunes!
Did you know that 50 Ways to Worry Less Now almost didn’t exist?
After I stated my intent to write this book, I experienced a period of turmoil and resistance. My whispered lies seemed to wake up and say, âWhat? This canât be! Thereâs no way youâre going do that!â âYou canât get this honest about your life; people will think youâre neurotic,â and âYou canât handle it if people criticize you.â
Suddenly, I found myself unable to write.
A quote from Goethe sums up the coincidences that followed soon after: âThe moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred.â
So, how did “providence” move me forward? I discovered a new tool that helped me write from my heart: Meditation.
Despite knowing about the many benefits of meditation, I had never been able to get the hang of it. I just couldnât quiet my incessant thinking long enough to feel successful.
Here’s how providence let me know it was time to learn this valuable skill:
While at lunch with my friend Chris, who had just completed her first book, I shared my fears about my writing. She told me how meditating had calmed her mind and given her a connection to a source of wise guidance in her work.
Soon after, I made a new friend, Mara, who meditates for twenty minutes twice a day. I became envious of her unflappable sense of peace.
Later that month, a woman in my book club mentioned she recently began meditating as part of her treatment for shingles, and had not had an episode since.
After spontaneously deciding to attend a womenâs retreat, I found that the topic was meditation! As the weekend progressed, I began to believe I could actually adopt this helpful practice.
Soon after the retreat, a friend asked me to join her for Deepak Chopra and Oprah Winfreyâs 21-day online meditation challenge.
At that point, I looked up to the heavens, and said, âOkay, Okay!â and began to meditate most mornings. Within a few years, I had a solid first draft of this book. A few years later, in early 2018, I published the paperback and e-book.
Last year, when I went to the bank to set up a checking account for my new business, I mentioned to the gentleman that I had just written a book. He replied, “Can I get it as an audiobook? That’s all I listen to.” Wow! Was I ever surprised.
So, last fall, I began the process of learning all about creating an audiobook. You can see my journey in YouTube videos number one; two; three, four, five, and an overview in this Blog. The final video celebrating the completion of the audiobook is here.
So, how does meditation fit into my life today? I find if I skip my morning meditation, I have less serenity and bravery to deal with my challenges.
For example, I recently began my day by reading many emails about a committee I’m on. When I later went to my desk to piece together some new ideas for a workshop, I noticed I was tense and couldnât find the right ideas. I then stopped, asked myself, âWhatâs wrong?â and remembered I had neglected to meditate.
Instead of criticizing myself, I gave myself kudos for noticing my tension. Recalling that itâ s never too late to start a day over, I did just that. As I entered the stillness, I could almost hear my body saying, âOK, the wise one is driving the bus now. We can stop the high alert.â IÂ received a wondrous result: I found the exact inspiration I had been seeking.
So, if you have a dream you’d like to pursue, try adding meditation to your daily routine. I like Insight Timer‘s guided meditations. They’re free and address a variety of topics.
Give it a try and let providence show you what’s really in your heart to contribute to the world!

Harriet Hunter has written one of the best daily meditation books Iâve seen in a long time. I just love reading it each morning. Below is an excerpt of the April 21st meditation (p. 123) from Miracles of Recovery: Daily Meditations of Hope, Courage.  (Order book Here)
âHow many times have we heard others put someone down with, âYouâre not good enough to do that,â or âYouâll never be able to. . .â? Do these or similar statements resonate within you?
âThese are the telltale signs of self-sabotage. âSelf-sabotage is the mechanism used to denigrate our power, as if we have none at all. âWe become what we think. We need to stop rehearsing our rejections.
âOver time, self-sabotage becomes form fitting, snug in the mis-identification of our self-worth. It feels familiar, safe and warm. We know self-sabotage well because weâve endured it for a lifetime.
âSomewhere we heard we should promote others while sacrificing ourselves to gain friends and keep the peace. To do so would be to tell ourselves the greatest lie of all: We deserve nothing, but others do. Treating ourselves with the same gentleness and loving care we give to family and others is what we need.
âThere is plenty of inner strength and fortitude already deep inside, and we deserve to hear it reflected in our voice.
âSo why not let it begin with us? No longer can we allow ourselves to take part in self-deprecating talk. Our voice is listening, waiting for the echo of words that promise love and kindness for who we are.
“When we change the way we see ourselves, we get to change our lives and the way others see us too, with resonating confidence.”
Todayâs Meditation
âToday I am conscious of how others speak to me and how it makes me feel. I will not accept negative, demeaning talk from anyone–even me–as I recreate with loving care who I want to be.â

Today, as I listened to Day 3 of Deepak & Oprah’s free (I love free!) meditation series on gratitude, Deepak made a statement that stopped me in my tracks:
“The good things in your life show that abundance has included you.”
Shut out of Abundance
I realized that, although I DO believe Deepak’s words now, it was not always so. For years, I felt everyone else had everything they wanted, but somehow I had been excluded.
– I couldn’t feel safe in my home, but of course everybody else did, right?
– I couldn’t make a romance last forever, but everybody else could, right? I mean, look at the fairy tales!!
– I couldn’t stop my own drugging, drinking and sleeping around — those were things nobody else did, right?
So apparently, I was basically a bad person doing bad stuff who didn’t deserve good things. Although I thought I had been denied abundance, I couldn’t have been more wrong!
Abundance to the Max!
After embarking on a vigorous program of spiritual practice, recovery, and therapy, I can honestly say that for several years now, I’ve been living the life of my dreams.
I’m happily married–30 years this May; just published an award-winning book; spend the winters away from the cold; and even though advancing in my years, I still enjoy golf and time with my husband, family, and a multitude of dear friends.
I’m so grateful to be able to report that I HAVE been included in abundance, just like Deepak said!
You too deserve abundance. See GigiLanger.com to learn about the tools that transformed my life. They might work for you too!
